Plot
Reshma (Vidya Balan) runs away from her husband’s house. She tries to get role in a movie but she is insulted by the director for being unattractive and useless. She goes to a director and fills in for the female dancer where she wears revealing clothes and dances with whips. Her bold dancing brings a lot of male audience to the movie theatre. The director searches for Reshma and finally finds her and gives her the stage name “Silk.” She meets her idol actor Suryakant (Naseeruddin Shah). At first, he ignores her but she makes herself stand out by saying that she will sleep with him many times. She does a lot of movies where she wears sexy clothes, dances seductively and gets lots of male fans who go weak at the knees when they see her. Silk gets very angry when she notices that Suryakant ignores her in public places.
One night, Silk and Suryakant are being naughty in his bedroom when suddenly his wife knocks at the door. She hides in the closet and is heartbroken when she sees Suryakant doing sex with his wife [through the keyhole of the closet]. Another day, Suryakant insults her by saying that Silk is the dirty secret that no one wants to talk about in broad daylight. Suryakant’s younger brother writer Ramukant (Tushar Kapoor) falls in love with Silk. Silk is finally happy that someone loves her heart and not her body. At a party, she meets Shakeela. Silk feels threatened that Shakeela will replace her in the movie industry. They have a dance off. At the end, Silk makes Shakeela trip intentionally showing her that she is the top actress. Ramu brought his parents to introduce Silk to them. He is embarrassed because Silk was wearing a revealing dress, she was drunk and was not acting in a respectable manner. Their relationship is over. Silk’s life starts falling apart. She is an alcoholic and a chain smoker. Feminists and critics degrade her.
Silk’s enemy Abraham (Emraan Hashmi), a film director hates her but suddenly starts falling in love with her. Silk does not get movie roles anymore. She has to pay debt. She is bound to call a director who gave her his business card before. She goes there and is shocked to find out that the director wants her to do a porn movie. She is drunk. The police raid the house. She ends up coming in front of her old house where her mom lives. Silk is so embarrassed about herself that she flees. Abraham brings Silk’s mom to his house. His plan is to surprise Silk by making her meet her mom. When he calls her, Silk says that she is going to sleep and so that Abraham tells others that Silk says goodbye to them. Abraham goes to a movie event which is attended by Suryakant and Ramukant as well. Suddenly Abraham realizes what Silk is going to do. He rushes to her apartment but it is too late. She is wearing Saree and lying on the bed. She killed herself by drinking poison. At the end, Abraham and Silk’s mom burn Silk’s dead body. Abraham was the only one who understood Silk’s pain. Silk killed herself from a lot of depression.
